They inhabit both the Western and Eastern Hemispheres, but are more prevalent in the Western Hemisphere. There are 4 species found in the Americas and 2 species in the Old World.

Flamingos are particularly known for their habit of standing on one leg, which has puzzled many scientists. After research, some scientists speculate that flamingos stand on one leg to conserve energy and improve blood circulation. Some populations are short-distance migrators. This is the largest flamingo species, averaging 110–150 cm (43–60 in) in height and weighing 2–4 kg (4.4–8.8 lbs). The largest recorded male reached a height of 187 cm (74 in) and weighed 4.5 kg (10 lbs). It is closely related to the American flamingo and the Chilean flamingo and has sometimes been considered the same species.
The Sibley-Ahlquist classification in the 1990s placed flamingos in the order Ciconiiformes instead of the order Phoenicopteriformes.
